Some facts about the badger:
Although rarely seen, the badger is widespread throughout most of Scandinavia. The badger is active at night and spends the daylight hours in its burrow.
The badger is characterized by its wedge-shaped head, short but sturdy legs, black and white facial markings with longitudinal stripes and a heavy, bulbous body. The fur is silvery gray on the back and black on the underside. The badger is around 70-80 cm long and typically weighs between 12 and 18 kg.
The badger’s pine-covered habitat is in the cultivated landscape. It burrows in deciduous or mixed forest, scrub or field boundaries. In addition to the forest, the badger’s territory includes small hilly mosaic landscapes with cultivated land, fields, meadows, pastures and clearings. Pastures and small towns and residential areas are also popular. The graves can form entire complexes with dozens of passageways. These can be quite old, as they are passed down from generation to generation.
The animal’s gait is waddling. Badgers (unlike foxes) leave clear trail systems of droppings behind them, often full of beetle scales.
Food consists of earthworms, berries, fruit, small mammals, eggs, amphibians, baby birds, grains, beetles and wasps, carrion and reptiles. The badger rummages around in the ground with its snout for food. The same is seen in the pig.
Badgers mate most often in the spring but can happen throughout the summer. The female is pregnant for about 1 year and the cubs are most commonly born in early March.
Did you know that the badger belongs to the marten family and is Denmark’s second largest land predator?
